2016-2017 Academic Year Nine-Month Expense Estimate International Undergraduate Student
Students who will be accompanied by their spouse and/or children will need to purchase the Student Family Health Insurance Plan. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information regarding additional dependent costs.
IMPORTANT: Additional one-time fees apply for first term enrollment, and actual fees could be 5-10% more than indicated here. Costs for the academic year are based on estimated information. Final fees are set by the UMass Amherst Board of Trustees in summer of each year; therefore, estimates are subject to change. Visit the Bursar’s website (www.umass.edu/bursar) for up-to-date 2016-2017 tuition, fees, room, and board charges.
1. This 9-month estimate does not include any expenses incurred for the summer months or any winter or summer courses that might be taken.
2. The Student Health Benefit Plan is mandatory. In accordance with Massachusetts law, students are required to have primary health insurance which meets certain requirements. At UMass Amherst, International students must maintain coverage under the University’s Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP).
All full-time students are automatically enrolled and billed for the SHBP. Insurance through non-U.S. insurance companies is NOT allowed. Students are billed in the fall for the period of August 1 through January 31, and in the spring from mid-January through July 31 (total of 12 months).
A family insurance plan is available at additional cost; more information is available on the University Health Services website.
3. Residence halls are closed during UMass holiday periods, such as Thanksgiving weekend in November, winter break in January, and spring break in March. During those periods, students not living on campus in one of the Break Housing Residence Halls are responsible for their own alternate housing.
Students who need housing during those breaks have two options: 1) Find housing on their own for the period when the university is closed, or, 2) For an additional cost, students can stay in temporary on-campus housing on a space available basis. More information is available on the Residential Life website.
4. Meal plan – All first-year students are automatically assigned to the Unlimited Meal Plan. Once their bill is posted, students may change to the Basic Meal Plan to reduce expenses. More information is available on the Meal Plan website.
