Indian Institute of Technology Delhi established in 1963 as an Institute of National Importance, is one of the seven institutions in the IIT system. It was accorded the status of deemed university with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to award its own degrees.
The Institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its Departments and Centres. The Institute admits on an average about 500 students for the undergraduate programmes and about 1000 students for the postgraduate programmes every year.
Academic year at IIT Delhi consists of two semesters, starting in July and January respectively. IIT Delhi offers its student an up-to-date curriculum, which is continually updated. Students and faculty both play equally significant role in deciding the curriculum.
The system offers a lot of flexibility, course structure at IITD varies depending not only on the academic level but also on the discretion of the instructor. The education system is organized around credit system with continuous evaluation of student’s performance.
Continuous evaluation in the form of periodic homework assignments and examinations are intended to ensure that the student is aware of his level of proficiency. Medium of instruction at IIT Delhi is ENGLISH.
Admissions are made before semester beginning end of July every year. However, Ph.D. and M.S. (Research) applicants may apply any time during the year. Foreign nationals can seek admissions to various Postgraduate and Research Programmes under following different categories:
- Self-Financing Students
- Under MoU
- Cultural-Exchange Fellowship Programme
- Casual Students
Foreign nationals seeking admission in any one of the aforesaid categories will have to satisfy the minimum eligibility criteria for admission to the programmes as prescribed by the Institute. TOEFL is advised for students whose medium of instruction is not English. GRE score may also be sent, if available. However, both TOEFL and GRE are optional and candidates without these are also considered for admission.
Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.D.]
The Institute offers research programmes leading to the degree of Ph.D. in various areas in the following Departments & Centres/Schools :
All selected foreign nationals will be required to pay fees as follows
- US Dollars 2,000 (tuition fees) + Rs. 7285 (miscellaneous charges in Indian Currency) per semester for SAARC Countries.
- US Dollars 4,000 (tuition fees) + Rs. 7285 (miscellaneous charges in Indian Currency) per semester for other than SAARC Countries.
Boarding Charges :
In addition to the above, every student staying in the hostel will be required to pay approximately Rs. 1,000 per month towards boarding charges.
Hostel life is one of the most enjoyable times in one’s life and this is no exception as far as IIT Delhi is concerned. Every hostel in the institute gives each individual ample opportunity to develop many qualities. Every hostel is equipped with a TV room, a mess, a music room, hostel cyber cafe. In addition to this, each room in the hostel is provided with an LAN/intemet connection.
There are nine boys hostels and two girls hostels in IIT Delhi. Each hostel accommodates more than 300 students ranging from first year students to Ph. D. students. The table enlists the hostels at IIT Delhi.

Every now and then inter-hostel events are being organized. The freshers are encoraged to take part in various activities which are organized as a part of Fresher Events in the first two weeks of their stay.
